Camp Nivica Review
Six beautifully appointed safari-style tents, each with its own private bathroom, perched on the edge of one of the Balkan region’s most impressive yet least-known canyons. Camp Nivica is a very special place to stay – one of our favourite places in Albania, in fact.
The camp is the brainchild of a Swedish expat with a background in African safaris, Astrid Lindburg, who first visited the village in 2019. Back then even reaching Nivica was a mission in itself – there were no asphalt roads, and the main connection to the nearby town of Tepelenë was prone to frequent landslides. That’s all changed today – now there are three good asphalt roads to the village, and the world is slowly catching on to an area that was previously barely known even by Albanians.
Camp Nivica is well away from any buildings, on the opposite side of the canyon from Nivica itself – so about 500m as the crow flies, or six kilometres to drive. The last stretch is on a very bad dirt road unsuitable for road cars, so if you don’t have a 4×4 the camp guide, Wilson, will come and pick you up in his Land Rover.
Once you reach the camp, you’ll feel like you’re in another world. We recommend timing your arrival for the early evening, so you can catch the sunset from the bar, and watch Egyptian vultures soar high above the canyon (there are at least two breeding pairs at Nivica). After sundown you’ll eat with the other guests, then can enjoy a raki or two around the camp fire, and star-gaze. The whole experience is completely magical.
In terms of activities, the assumption is that you’ll want to go hiking. However, if you’d appreciate a more sedate option Astrid can arrange a cookery class for you in the village.
