Albania Self Drive Tours

Unique Road Trips

What We Do

We provide complete Albania self drive tour packages. That means the vehicle, the route, accommodation and any activities you agree with us before booking the tour, such as rafting or hiking or gastronomic experiences.

How We Work

We design our tours to start with the delivery of the car to your hotel in central Tirana. We will pick the car up from you at the airport when you fly home. However, you can return the car to Tirana city centre if you prefer, or another destination such as Saranda if you are exiting Albania on the Corfu ferry. You might find the perfect Albania self drive itinerary on this page. But if you don’t, each tour can all be adapted around your requirements. In fact most of the tours we create are unique.

Why Book Your Albania Self Drive Tour With Us?

Albania is developing rapidly. Five years ago we would recommend using a 4×4 for any self drive tour of the country. As of 2024 it is possible to make a great road trip in a Ferrari – new asphalt is being put down every week. Because we live in Albania and are travelling the country constantly we have the latest information on road conditions, and update our routes all the time to take account of changes.

Why Not Just Plan A Tour Independently?

If you rely on Google Maps to plan any Albania self drive tour or road trip, you will go badly wrong. There are brand-new roads that don’t yet exist online, and extremely bad roads that Google Maps recommends. In fact, one of our favourite things about driving in Albania is meeting tourists trying to drag a hire car over a mountain pass that is suitable only for 4×4 cars with raised ground clearance.

The standard cars we use for tours are the Kia Stonic or Hyundai Venue. These are ideal for couples, or if you are travelling with kids. If there are four adults travelling, we use the larger Kia Sportage. All Kias are 2022 models; the Hyundai 2024. Full CASCO insurance is included as standard for our road car tours. If you want to make a tour by 4×4 using off-road routes, then please get in touch. We started out as an Albania 4×4 tour specialist…

Southwest Albania Self Drive Tours

If this is your first visit to Albania and you are on a tight time-frame, our strong recommendation is to focus on the southwest of the country. Here you’ll find the key cultural cities and sites, incredible mountain scenery and hiking opportunities, and avoid the terrible congestion that you have to endure if you drive north to the over-crowded Albanian Alps. And, of course, the beaches of the Albanian Riviera are to be found in the south!

If you have a little more time, then we recommend making a loop of south Albania, with nights at Lake Ohrid and Korça before moving onto Përmet, Berat, Gjirokastra and the Riviera. It’s also possible to include North Macedonia and even a night or two in northern Greece if you have time.

Camp Nivica Self Drive Itineraries

We’re big fans of the amazing Camp Nivica, hidden away in Kurvelesh, south Albania. It provides a unique experience in this corner of the Balkan peninsula and is highly recommended. We’ve designed a few self drive tours based on staying two nights here. Read more…
